Uttar Pradesh government mulls ₹50,000 cash assistance scheme for women

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh is considering a financial assistance scheme for women ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. The proposed plan aims to provide a total of ₹50,000 to eligible women.

Under the reported proposal, an initial installment of ₹20,000 would be deposited into accounts before the elections. If the NDA government returns to power, three subsequent installments of ₹10,000 each would follow. The scheme is expected to target women from economically weaker sections, lower-income households, and those belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Some reports suggest eligibility could extend to families with an annual income of up to ₹12 lakh.

Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna stated that women's empowerment is a top priority for the government and noted that the state would consider measures if demanded by women's organizations. The move comes amid political competition, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav pledging ₹40,000 in yearly assistance for women.
