Uttar Pradesh government to train 10,000 youth for cow protection initiative
The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched a new initiative to involve the younger generation, specifically Gen Z, in cow protection and service. The program aims to train approximately 10,000 ‘Gau Mitras’ (cow friends) across the state to raise awareness about the social and economic importance of cattle.
The initiative will utilize a training model where master trainers are first educated to subsequently train others, creating a widespread network in rural areas. Priority will be given to individuals who already demonstrate an interest in cow protection.
Beyond animal welfare, the government intends to link cow protection to the rural economy, natural farming, women's empowerment, green energy, and employment opportunities. This includes transforming cow shelters (gaushalas) into hubs for economic activity through products derived from dung and urine, as well as biogas plants. Shyam Bihari Gupta, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Gau Seva Ayog, stated that the goal is to move beyond traditional shelters to create a model of self-reliance and rural prosperity.
