Uttar Pradesh increases MBBS and BDS intern stipends to Rs 25,000

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a significant increase in the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS students undergoing rotating internships at government medical colleges and universities. The monthly stipend will rise from Rs 12,000 to Rs 25,000, representing an increase of over 108 percent.

This decision, announced following a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is expected to benefit more than 20,000 intern doctors across the state. Previously, stipends were set at Rs 7,500 before being raised to Rs 12,000 in 2021.

The hike follows recent protests by medical interns at several institutions, including King George's Medical University in Lucknow, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, and Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut, who were seeking improved financial support.
