Uttar Pradesh sees rise in institutional deliveries under Janani Suraksha Yojana
The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) in Uttar Pradesh has led to a significant increase in institutional deliveries, contributing to a decline in the maternal mortality rate (MMR) across the state.
Between April 1 and August 9 of the current financial year, the state recorded 717,736 institutional deliveries. Of these, 543,661 beneficiaries have already received financial assistance under the scheme. To encourage hospital births over home deliveries, the government provides 1,400 rupees for deliveries in rural areas and 1,000 rupees for those in urban areas.
Medical experts, including Dr. Anju Agarwal from King George Medical University, note that hospital-based deliveries improve safety by providing access to trained doctors, nurses, medication, blood supplies, and emergency services, allowing for the timely treatment of complications.
