Uttara Kannada faces rainfall deficit and record heat
The Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka is experiencing significant weather anomalies, including a severe rainfall deficit and record-breaking temperatures. In Bhatkal, a coastal town known for heavy monsoon rains, annual rainfall is projected to fall below half of its typical 5,000–5,500 mm range. This shortage has led to a sharp decline in water inflow to the Kadavinakatte dam, threatening drinking water supplies, agriculture, and livestock.
Agricultural concerns are mounting as approximately 2,000–2,500 hectares of paddy cultivation face risks from drying fields. Additionally, reduced vegetation growth is impacting fodder availability for cattle.
Simultaneously, Honnavar has recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8°C, matching an October temperature record set in 1957. The region is seeing a stark contrast between intense daytime heat and significantly cooler nights, raising concerns regarding seasonal illnesses and the general well-being of outdoor workers.
