Uttarakhand bans gutkha and pan masala for one year
The Uttarakhand government has issued a directive banning the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of gutkha, pan masala, and all food products containing tobacco or nicotine. The ban is set to last for one year, effective from October 13, 2026.
Issued by Food Safety and Drug Administration Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, the order utilizes powers under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The measure aims to protect public health and curb the consumption of addictive substances that contribute to oral cancer and other serious diseases.
Data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-2) highlights the necessity of such measures, noting that 26.5 percent of adults aged 15 and older in the state consume tobacco. This includes 12.4 percent who are addicted to chewing tobacco. The state has previously implemented similar bans in 2013, 2015, and 2019.
