Ankita Bhandari murder case: Parents detained at India Gate protest

The parents of Ankita Bhandari, a 19-year-old resort receptionist murdered in Uttarakhand in 2022, staged an overnight protest at India Gate in New Delhi to demand justice and a thorough CBI investigation into an alleged 'VIP' connection in the case. The family is specifically protesting the appointment of BJP leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim, requesting President Droupadi Murmu to withhold the appointment until the investigation concludes.

During the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, Delhi Police detained the Bhandari parents along with several Congress leaders, including Pawan Khera and Supriya Shrinate, during a crackdown at the protest site. The detentions drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who described the police action as brutality and an assault on democratic freedoms.

Following their release, Ankita’s parents issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to cancel Gautam’s appointment, warning of nationwide protests and a hunger strike if their demands are not met. Dushyant Kumar Gautam has denied the allegations and initiated defamation proceedings.
