UV protection tips for hair and skin during German summer

Intense UV radiation can damage hair by breaking down keratin, drying strands, increasing split ends and accelerating colour fading, especially in chemically treated or dyed hair. Experts recommend wearing hats or scarves, rinsing hair after exposure to sea or pool water, limiting heat‑styling, and using leave‑in conditioners or sprays that contain UV filters, antioxidants such as acai‑extract, panthenol for moisture, and amino acids like L‑arginine to strengthen the fiber.

For skin, dermatologists stress that sunscreen is indispensable. Dr. Alice Martin explains that “typical skin types II/III can stay about ten to fifteen minutes in the sun without protection”, and that the protection time is extended by multiplying the skin’s self‑protection period by the SPF factor. Dr. Christoph Liebich adds that “the same high‑SPF sunscreen should be applied thickly and reapplied every two to three hours, especially after sweating or swimming”. Choosing the appropriate SPF according to skin type and re‑applying regularly helps prevent sunburn and long‑term damage.

Together, the advice highlights that both hair and skin require dedicated UV defence measures throughout the summer to maintain health and appearance.
