UV Radiation Risks to Eyes and Skin Prompt Health Warnings

Health experts warn that ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause serious eye damage, including corneal sunburns, early cataracts, macular degeneration and even skin cancers around the eyelids. Proper sunglasses with certified UV filters are essential; inexpensive fashion lenses without protection can be more harmful than no glasses at all.

UV exposure also causes sunburns regardless of temperature. The UV index, not the mercury, determines risk, and it remains high on cool, cloudy, or high‑altitude days, as well as near snow, sand or water. Protective measures such as using sunscreen, wearing UV‑blocking eyewear and monitoring the UV index (protective actions advised from an index of 3 onward) are recommended.

French health agencies and the World Health Organization emphasize that clouds do not block UV fully and that awareness of UV intensity is crucial for preventing both skin and ocular injuries.
