UV‑index displays installed on beaches in Melilla and Mijas

The Melilla Environment and Nature Council installed four smart "solmáforos" on the city’s southern beaches. The devices show real‑time ultraviolet radiation levels through a colour‑coded visual system, enabling visitors to assess sun exposure instantly and adopt appropriate protection measures, said councilor Daniel Ventura.

In Mijas, the municipal government placed a solar‑powered UV indicator called “Uvilisco” on El Bombo beach. Developed by the University of Málaga as part of the “Soludable” project launched by the Costa del Sol University Hospital, the clock translates the sun’s UV index into a shadow length that changes throughout the day. Councilor Daniel Gómez highlighted that the installation aims to raise awareness of photoprotection and prevent skin‑cancer cases.

Both initiatives are framed as public‑health and educational tools designed to promote safer sun‑bathing habits for residents and tourists alike.
