UW-Madison campus sexual assault leads to two arrests
Two men, Yofred Marcano Gutierrez, 31, and Arturo Santos Albujas, 27, have been charged following the sexual assault of a transgender woman on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The incident occurred in the early morning of August 29 at the Goodspeed Family Pier near Alumni Park on Lake Mendota.
According to the UW-Madison Police Department, the victim met the two men on State Street before being led to the pier. The victim alleged that the men pushed her to the ground, assaulted her, and that Gutierrez attempted to strangle her. Neither the victim nor the suspects are affiliated with the university.
The suspects are residents of Fitchburg. Following the arrests, political discussions have emerged regarding the immigration status of the suspects and the refusal of Dane County authorities to honor an ICE detainer for at least one of the men.
