UWV expands investigation into WIA disability benefit errors
The Dutch benefits agency, UWV, has expanded its investigation into potential errors regarding WIA disability benefits. Following internal signals that certain incorrect benefits might have been missed, the agency adjusted its selection criteria to broaden the scope of its audit.
UWV is reviewing a total of 73,000 WIA benefits for potential daily wage calculation errors. While approximately 21,000 cases have already been confirmed as correct, 52,000 cases require manual inspection. This expansion includes 13,000 individuals who had previously been told their benefits did not require checking; these individuals will be notified in October.
The investigation follows findings by the Netherlands Court of Audit, which noted that UWV had focused heavily on clearing backlogs rather than ensuring the accuracy of disability benefit determinations. As a result, tens of thousands of people may have received incorrect amounts. UWV will begin paying compensation this autumn to those who received insufficient funds. Individuals who were accidentally overpaid will not be required to return the excess money.
