Uyuni communities face damage from intense snowfall and low temperatures

In the municipality of Uyuni, the Risk Management Unit has intensified monitoring of more than 15 communities following intense snowfall, rain, and low temperatures beginning August 11, 2026. The weather event has caused damage to camelid livestock, crops, and infrastructure, including roads.

Authorities are currently assessing the impact on public health, particularly regarding the vulnerability of children and the elderly to extreme cold. Affected communities include Sullchi, Noel Mariaca, Villa Esperanza, Huatacalla, Río Mulato, Kulla, and several others. Local officials are working with community leaders to compile damage reports and identify the most severely impacted zones.
