Uzu no Oka Memorial Museum to host rice festival in Awaji Island
The Uzu no Oka Great Naruto Bridge Memorial Museum, operated by Uzunokuni Minami-Awaji Co., Ltd., will host the ‘Autumn Manpuku Rice Festival’ from November 1 to November 30, 2026. The event aims to boost rice consumption and support farmers facing a difficult economic environment.
Recent data highlights significant challenges in the Japanese rice industry, including rising production costs and a decline in farmers. In Hyogo Prefecture, the number of selling farmers has decreased by 21% over the last five years. Additionally, rice prices have seen a downward trend, with some estimates showing a 27.7% decrease in retail prices for certain varieties compared to the previous year, while private inventories reached 2.43 million tons as of late June 2026.
The festival will feature limited-time gourmet menus, including large-scale roast beef bowls and oversized burgers. Interactive activities include rice-themed fortune telling, where proceeds will be donated to children's cafeterias in Minami-Awaji City, and food tasting sessions to find the best side dishes for rice.
