Uzuncaburç Ancient City attracts visitors in Mersin
The Uzuncaburç Ancient City, located in the Silifke district of Mersin at an altitude of 1,200 meters, is emerging as a significant destination for cultural tourism. Situated at the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, the site dates back to the 3rd century BC and served as a place of worship for the Olba Kingdom during the Hellenistic period.
During the reign of Roman Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD, the city became autonomous and was known as Diokaisareia, at which time it minted its own currency. Key archaeological features of the site include a colonnaded street, the Temple of Zeus, a ceremonial gate, a theater, and rock tombs within necropolis areas.
Due to its high altitude, the site has become a popular retreat for visitors seeking to escape heat and humidity. Visitors have compared the atmosphere of the ruins to Ephesus, noting the potential for further discovery as excavations continue.
