Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced the official launch of the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan, a decade-long initiative aimed at modernizing Hungary's fixed-track transport network. The plan carries a total budget of 3,550 billion HUF. A significant portion of the funding is derived from the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme Plus (IKOP Plus), which provides 1,406 billion HUF in the current EU funding cycle and an additional 950 billion HUF in commitments for the next cycle.

Key infrastructure projects include upgrading the Budapest–Veresegyház–Vác and Budapest–Lajosmizse–Kecskemét lines, modernizing the Budapest HÉV suburban railway network, and the potential extension of the M3 metro line. Major lines serving Miskolc and Szeged are slated for upgrades to support speeds of up to 160 km/h. Other planned developments include the reconstruction of Debrecen’s main station, upgrades to the Debrecen–Nyíregyháza line, and preparations for the Pécs main line reconstruction.

The program also involves purchasing new InterCity trains, HÉV vehicles, and battery-powered trains for non-electrified regional routes such as Salgótarján and Szekszárd. Additionally, Vitézy reported successful emergency energy-saving measures by MÁV and GYSEV, noting that MÁV freight electricity consumption dropped by 91.5 percent during a critical five-hour window due to temporary suspensions of 45 electric freight trains.
