VA warns of deepfake phishing scams targeting veterans

Scammers are utilizing artificial intelligence to conduct deepfake phishing attacks targeting veterans. A recent fraudulent Facebook post, masquerading as a ‘Veterans & Retired Seniors Grant Program’ and appearing to be sponsored by a government official, successfully tricked some individuals into providing direct-deposit information.

As a result of these scams, VA benefits have been redirected to criminals, causing significant financial losses for affected veterans. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is working to reimburse those impacted, noting that the experience is both a financial and traumatic ordeal. These AI-driven tactics allow scammers to create highly convincing fake voices, videos, or images to impersonate trusted entities such as banks, doctors, or government agencies.
