Vada Coast Guard seizes 2 km of illegal octopus traps

The Coast Guard of Vada, coordinated by the Livorno Maritime Directorate, has seized approximately 2 km of octopus traps and pots placed illegally in the waters off the Vada tourist landing.

The illegal equipment was discovered following a report from a recreational boater. The traps were positioned along a primary entry and exit route for vessels, creating a significant hazard to navigation during the peak summer season. Additionally, the equipment lacked proper signaling and was placed in a prohibited zone.

The seizure also addresses violations of the biological rest period, which prohibits the use of octopus traps and pots from July 15 to August 15 to protect the species. Local fishing vessel operators assisted the Coast Guard in the removal and seizure of the gear. Maurizio Perullo, Commander of the Vada Local Maritime Office, stated the operation served to both preserve protected fish species and ensure maritime safety.
