Vaginal microbiome linked to psychological traits in new study

A recent cross-sectional study published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that the vaginal microbiome may be linked to specific psychological traits and local metabolic patterns.

Researchers in Italy investigated the connection by combining microbiome profiling with metabolomic assessment in 105 women of reproductive age. The study found that distinct vaginal community-state types (CSTs) were associated with reward responsiveness, motivational drive, and behavioral inhibition. Exploratory analyses indicated that metabolites might statistically account for some of these associations.

While the vaginal microbiome is known to play a significant role in women’s health, its composition can be influenced by hormonal changes, smoking, sexual behavior, infections, and antibiotic use. Researchers noted that larger longitudinal studies are required to determine if these patterns are consistent and to further understand the relationship between the microbiome and psychological health.
