Vagli Sotto statue of Don Lorenzo Milani inaugurated amid controversy over anti‑communist plaque
On 31 July, the municipality of Vagli Sotto in Lucca province unveiled a marble sculpture of Don Lorenzo Milani. The monument includes a plaque bearing a phrase attributed to the priest: “Il comunismo è la mediazione e l’organizzazione politica di ogni male, al fine di consentire a una classe dirigente parassitaria e brutale la gestione di ogni forma di potere sulle spalle degli ultimi.”
The town council, led by Mayor Mario Puglia, decided to keep the text despite repeated requests from the Don Lorenzo Milani Foundation and other cultural groups to remove or amend it. At the ceremony, regional councilor Jacopo Maria Ferri (Forza Italia) and Alessandro Mazzerelli, founder of the Movimento Autonomista Toscano, were present. Foundation president Agostino Burberi announced legal action, arguing the quotation is not authentic and misrepresents Milani’s teachings. The ANPI condemned the use of the phrase as a revisionist distortion of Milani’s legacy. A local political group, Fiamma Tricolore, also defended the monument against criticism from professor Pietro Ichino.
The dispute centers on whether the plaque accurately reflects Milani’s views and on broader debates over historical memory in Italy.
