Vajont landslide research reveals new geological details

New scientific research into the Vajont landslide in northern Italy is challenging previous geological models. Recent measurements and three-dimensional X-ray imaging of the subsurface have provided new insights into how the mass fell into the basin and triggered the catastrophic flood.

The findings are the result of multi-year measurement campaigns conducted by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) in Trieste and the University of Parma. Researchers, including Roberto Francese, Massimo Giorgi, and Federico Fischanger, noted that previous studies focused primarily on surface observations, whereas the current investigation emphasizes the structures beneath the surface.

These scientific updates were presented during commemorative events in the Friaul-Julisch Venetien region. The research comes amid local debates in Longarone regarding a planned hydroelectric power plant and water utility fees.
