Val Camonica flooding forces evacuations and destroys bridge

Severe weather and intense rainfall have caused significant flooding and geological instability in Val Camonica, Italy. Emergency services, including the Vigili del Fuoco and Provincial Police, are managing multiple crises across several municipalities.

In the Sonico area, a debris flow destroyed the bridge over the Val Rabbia stream in Rino di Sonico. This event, combined with flooding, led to the evacuation of 81 people: 57 from the Rino di Sonico side and 24 from the Garda side. Additionally, the Oglio river flooded parts of Malonno, prompting specialized fire brigade units to work with private companies to contain the water.

In the Stadolina and Vallaro areas, the flooding of the Vallaro stream forced residents and vacationers to evacuate their homes. Local officials noted that a recently completed upstream dam successfully intercepted over 40,000 cubic meters of debris, mitigating further damage.

Infrastructure has been heavily impacted, with State Road 42 closed between Sonico and Malonno due to mud and debris. Other areas, such as Incudeno and the Blé stream, also experienced flooding or rockfalls, leading to precautionary closures of local roads and cycling paths.
