Val di Susa high-speed rail project faces cost and progress concerns

The high-speed rail project in Val di Susa remains a point of intense contention after more than 30 years of development. Critics argue the project has become economically unsustainable and environmentally damaging, noting that of the planned 118.8 km tunnel, only 21 km have been excavated.

Financial concerns have also surfaced, with the Court of Auditors reporting that projected costs have risen by 127%, increasing from 7 billion to 16 billion euros. While originally intended for passenger transport, the project has shifted focus toward a freight line, leading to debates regarding its necessity and the long-term impact on local ecosystems and economies.
