Chiomonte TAV construction site attacked in violent protest
Hundreds of No TAV activists stormed the high‑speed rail construction site at Chiomonte in the Val di Susa on 26 July 2026. Protesters used stones, homemade bombs and incendiary devices, setting police vehicles on fire and injuring more than 120 members of the police, carabinieri and financial police. Police identified roughly 400 – 450 participants, among them foreign nationals from France, Germany and Belgium, and seized masks, explosives and other incendiary material. Four suspected foreign members of the “Blocco Nero” network were detained. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited the site, while President Sergio Mattarella phoned the interior minister to express solidarity with the injured officers.
The incident caused estimated material damage of about €1 million to the construction works and prompted a strong condemnation from the Italian government, describing the attacks as an act of war against the State.
