Val Senales implements biodegradable geotextiles to protect glaciers
The Alpin Arena Senales in South Tyrol, Italy, has conducted a pilot project using biodegradable geotextiles to protect glacial snow during summer months. Part of the ‘MINI Takes Care’ initiative, these covers are made from natural cellulose fibers designed to reduce the dispersal of fossil-based microplastics.
Beyond environmental protection, the project aims for a circular economy; the covers are intended to be recovered at the end of their lifecycle and transformed into yarn, fabrics, and clothing. This technique supports ‘snowfarming,’ where large amounts of technical snow are stored under covers to ensure ski slopes can open early in the autumn season.
