Valdelsa Biological District formed by nine Italian municipalities

Nine municipalities in the Valdelsa region of Italy have signed a protocol to establish the Valdelsa Biological District. Led by San Gimignano and the Biodistretto di San Gimignano association, the initiative includes Casole d’Elsa, Castelfiorentino, Certaldo, Colle di Val d’Elsa, Gambassi Terme, Montaione, Montespertoli, and Poggibonsi.

The project aims to use organic agriculture as a driver for sustainable development, innovation, and territorial protection. By overcoming individual administrative boundaries, the district seeks to strengthen local supply chains, support agricultural businesses in converting to organic methods, and promote research and training. The strategy also focuses on integrating agriculture with environmental protection, tourism, and culture to enhance the region's identity and biodiversity.

This collaborative governance model is designed to help the territory access regional, national, and European funding. Following the protocol signing in Certaldo, the next phase involves engaging private companies and stakeholders. Starting September 14, 2026, official notices will be published on municipal websites, allowing interested parties to express interest until October 15, 2026. The group will then seek official recognition from the Tuscany Region.
