Valdeorras residents protest for urgent public healthcare improvements

Approximately 4,000 people participated in a demonstration in O Barco to demand urgent improvements to the public healthcare system in the Valdeorras region. Organized by the Plataforma da Sanidade Pública de Valdeorras, the march moved from the local hospital to Viloira plaza to protest the structural deterioration of healthcare services.

Protesters highlighted several critical deficiencies, including the lack of a permanent Pulmonology service. This is particularly significant given that the region is a major center for silicosis due to the local slate industry. While periodic consultations are provided, residents are demanding a stable, permanent service.

Additional grievances include the dismantling of Internal Medicine services, a shortage of specialists, and difficulties in primary care. The platform noted a loss of medical professionals in municipalities such as O Bolo, A Veiga, and Rubiá, as well as issues with pediatric care and the need for advanced life support ambulances to serve the aging population across the district.
