Vale completes assembly of new Evolution series locomotive for EFVM
Vale has completed the production of the first Evolution series locomotive destined for the Vitória a Minas Railway (EFVM). Manufactured by Wabtec in Contagem, Minas Gerais, the equipment is part of a 50-unit order intended to renew the fleet of two railways and reduce carbon emissions.
Of the total order, 36 units are allocated to the EFVM and 14 to the Carajás Railway (EFC). The new models consume 6% less fuel than current locomotives and are capable of operating with up to 25% biodiesel, exceeding the 15% requirement set by Brazilian legislation for 2026. Vale and Wabtec are also researching the use of ethanol-diesel blends.
This fleet renewal supports Vale’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 33% by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The Evolution series also offers a traction capacity increase of over 50%.
Separately, the EFVM has announced that tickets for its ‘Trem de Férias’ (Holiday Train) special night service for December are now on sale. This service operates between Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais without affecting regular passenger schedules. Additionally, the railway will modernize its ticket management and sales system on November 11 to improve security and user experience.
