Vale do Jequitinhonha farmer increases corn yield by 220%

Farmer Adevaldo Lopes dos Santos has achieved a 220% increase in corn productivity in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region of Brazil. By implementing new management techniques on a 1-hectare plot at Sítio Córrego Escuro, located near the border of Setubinha and Novo Cruzeiro, he reached a total production of 10,795 kg.

After 25 years of following traditional methods that yielded diminishing results, Santos sought technical assistance from Emater-MG. Extensionist Joel Lima da Fonseca noted that the improvements were driven by better seed selection, proper soil preparation, correct spacing, weeding, and fertilization.

In addition to the productivity boost, Santos won first place in the 1st Corn Productivity Contest held in the Palmeiras do Vale community. His success is being used as an example to encourage other local producers to adopt modern planting techniques. Beyond corn, the farm also produces coffee, pumpkin, and beans, with the involvement of the farmer's three children.
