Vale receives new train carriages for Carajás Railway

Vale has begun receiving the first 15 of 30 new passenger carriages for the Carajás Railway (EFC) in São Luís, Maranhão. The new fleet, manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC, is expected to arrive in full by the end of November.

This investment is part of Vale’s commitment following the renewal of the railway's concession with the Brazilian federal government. The modernization aims to double the annual passenger transport capacity and will enable daily two-way trips between the states of Maranhão and Pará.

The EFC currently operates Brazil’s longest passenger rail route, covering 892 kilometers with travel times reaching up to 16 hours. The new fleet will consist of 28 passenger cars, one social carriage, and one administrative support carriage. Improvements will focus on safety, accessibility, and passenger comfort, including more ergonomic reclining seats in economy class.
