British Columbia municipal updates: Okanagan Falls election and Valemount mayor charge
In British Columbia, two distinct municipal developments have occurred. Matt Taylor has been elected as the inaugural mayor of the District of Okanagan Falls, following a 2025 referendum to incorporate as a municipality. Taylor secured 780 votes, defeating Tyler Johnsen and Glen Innes. He will be joined on the inaugural council by Amy Bydal, Allison Symons, Randy Ludwar, and Eugene Dettling. The council is scheduled to complete the incorporation process on November 6.
Separately, Owen Michael Torgerson, the mayor of Valemount, has been charged with sexual assault. Following the charge, Torgerson has been placed on a mandatory leave of absence under the Community Charter, meaning he remains in office but cannot exercise any mayoral powers or duties. A publication ban is in place to protect the identity of the complainant. Torgerson’s arraignment has been rescheduled to November 3 in Prince George due to media attention surrounding the case.
