Valencia approves urban plan to expand General Cemetery

The Valencia Local Government Board has approved a modification to the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) to facilitate the expansion of the city's General Cemetery. The proposal aims to address the shortage of burial space by repurposing the parking area located along the Bulevar Sur to accommodate new rows of niches.

To mitigate the loss of surface parking, the plan includes provisions for potential underground parking, the specifics of which will be determined by the Mobility Service. The expansion is designed to balance funerary service needs with other municipal infrastructure projects, such as the development of the Safranar bus depot for the Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) and the electrification of its fleet.

This urban modification will reclassify the parking area from the Primary Road Network to a General Urban Service System. The initiative seeks to compensate for land previously allocated to an electrical substation and the EMT bus depot, ensuring the cemetery can continue to serve a growing population despite being constrained by existing boulevards, railways, and urban developments.
