Valencia commemorates 750th anniversary of King James I

The Valencia City Council approved a municipal programme to mark the 750th anniversary of the death of King James I (Jaume I) in 2026. The plan runs from 1 to 9 October and includes a civic procession on 9 October featuring the traditional "Marxa de la Senyera" on horseback and a historic sword parade. The city hall’s main square will be reserved exclusively for a series of commemorative events in prominent urban spaces.

Key cultural activities include a major exhibition on Jaume I at the Valencia Museum of History, a collaborative show at the Museum of Enlightenment and Modernity, and a medieval‑camp recreation in Parc Central with period‑accurate encampments, falconry displays and workshops. The municipal authorities will also restore an 1886 wooden bust of Jaume I, publish a comic and a historical novel about the monarch, and organise conferences, concerts and other public programmes throughout the celebration period.
