Valencia commemorates second anniversary of 2024 DANA flood disaster

Victims' associations and local communities in Valencia are organizing various memorial acts to mark the second anniversary of the DANA weather event that occurred on October 29, 2024. The tragedy resulted in 233 deaths and significantly impacted five regions. Commemorations include a ceremony titled ‘Memòria, unitat i futur’ at the Alaquàs castle, marches in the Hoya de Buñol, Albal, and Benetússer, and a demonstration in Valencia organized by social collectives.

In tandem with these memorials, the ‘Salvem les Fotos UPV / Recuperar les memòries’ project, led by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), has utilized artificial intelligence and scientific methods to restore damaged family photographs. The initiative has successfully recovered 340,000 images, helping families reconstruct memories lost during the flood. The project involves specialists from the UPV, the Faculty of Fine Arts, and the Institute of Heritage Restoration to ensure the long-term preservation of these photographic legacies.
