Valencia expands solar panels to 50 municipal sites and pilots shade awnings in public squares

The Valencia City Council has approved a contract worth €300,124.13 to design and install photovoltaic panels on more than 50 municipal buildings, including schools, libraries, fire stations, police facilities, social‑service centres and senior‑citizen homes. The work is divided into five lots and is slated for completion within eight months.

In parallel, the council began a pilot programme installing shade awnings in Plaza Espanya and Plaza Amèrica. The temporary structures are part of a wider "Plan Sombras" aimed at providing cooling corridors during summer heat waves. A four‑month study, coordinated by urban planning councillor Juan Giner, will assess technical solutions, costs and maintenance before a city‑wide roll‑out planned for 2026‑2027.
