Valencia flood judge alleges avoidable deaths and judicial pressure
Judge Nuria Ruiz Tobarra, leading the investigation into the DANA flood disaster in Valencia, has reported that there are ‘clear indications’ that several deaths could have been entirely avoided. The judge noted that the fatalities, particularly in the La Torre neighborhood, may have resulted from negligence in emergency management and delays or failures in issuing warnings. The investigation is looking into the actions of former Interior Minister Salomé Pradas and her deputy, Emilio Argüeso, regarding their adherence to civil protection regulations and flood risk plans.
In addition to the investigation into the disaster, Judge Ruiz Tobarra has filed a complaint with the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). She reported being subjected to pressures and illegal recordings within her courtroom during the initial stages of the inquiry. The magistrate stated that such actions constitute an attack on her judicial independence. The investigation into the floods, which resulted in 233 confirmed deaths, remains ongoing.
