Valencia floods trigger massive helicopter and boat rescues
Severe flooding in the Valencia province of Spain has necessitated large-scale emergency operations involving helicopters and boats. In a six-hour period on Monday, eight helicopters rescued more than 150 people, including children and a baby, from inundated areas such as Oliva, Pego, and surrounding towns. Many victims were trapped on rooftops or elevated terraces after intense rainfall, with some areas receiving over 400 litres of water per square metre.
While the situation in Oliva has begun to stabilize and no longer requires aerial support for urban rescues, the coastal municipalities of Bellreguard, Miramar, and Piles remain largely inaccessible by road. In these areas, emergency teams are using helicopters and light boats to evacuate residents from upper floors of homes, particularly those requiring urgent medical assistance or medication.
The rescue efforts are being coordinated by the Valencia Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and involve multiple agencies, including the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), the Civil Guard, the National Police, and regional emergency services. The flooding was exacerbated by the River Girona bursting its banks and significant rainfall occurring in a very short timeframe.
