Spain's Congress removes portraits of Francoist era presidents

The Spanish Congress of Deputies has removed the portraits of three presidents who served during the Franco dictatorship from its official gallery. The portraits of Esteban de Bilbao y Eguía, Antonio Iturmendi Bañales, and Alejandro Rodríguez de Valcárcel y Nebreda were taken down following an agreement by the Congress Board to comply with the Democratic Memory Law.

Congress President Francina Armengol stated that the move demonstrates a commitment to democratic memory and seeks to repair an injustice that has lasted too long by removing those who participated in the structures that sustained the dictatorship. The portraits will be transferred to the custody of Patrimonio Nacional.

The decision excludes the portrait of Torcuato Fernández-Miranda, who served as president during the transition to democracy, and will remain in place. This action precedes an institutional tribute scheduled for October 31 to honor the victims of the military coup, the Civil War, and the dictatorship.
