Valencia housing policy and protest tensions
In Valencia, political discussions regarding housing and urban planning are intensifying. Candela Anglés, the Housing spokesperson for the Popular Group in Les Corts, has praised the new Land Law of the Valencian Community. She stated the law aims to reduce bureaucracy and administrative delays to facilitate housing access. The law includes provisions to reserve at least 50 percent of residential buildability for protected housing in new public instruments and seeks to address rural depopulation by applying different urbanism standards to small municipalities compared to large cities.
Separately, Valencia Mayor María José Catalá has requested a technical coordination meeting with the Government Delegation to restore normalcy to the City Hall square. This follows a month-long unauthorized protest camp. Catalá noted that the fundamental right to protest has been exercised sufficiently and emphasized the need to respond to local merchants affected by the occupation. The Mayor rejected the protesters' demands to declare Valencia a tensioned zone or to implement rent caps as conditions for their departure, arguing that housing market regulation must be handled through official institutional channels.
