Valencia housing rights tensions rise amid evictions and union withdrawal

Tensions regarding housing rights and social protest are rising in Valencia. A resident named Giulia, facing eviction from her home in Montolivet, shared her struggle during a housing rights camp. She reported that her mother sold the property, which includes her residence, to large landlords owning over 60 properties. While the eviction was temporarily halted by a legal appeal following new housing decrees, Giulia continues to face psychological distress and awaits social services assistance.

Simultaneously, the CGT València union has announced its withdrawal from the ‘Junts per l’Habitatge’ platform. The union cited the criminalization of social protest and the justification of police repression as primary reasons for leaving. CGT València criticized other unions, such as CCOO and UGT, for adopting institutional discourses that condemn mobilization, stating they will continue to support housing struggles through direct action and independence.
