Aurelio Valdez Alcántara indicted for bribery in Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's Ministerio Público has filed a formal indictment and requested a trial for Aurelio Valdez Alcántara, a former prosecutor with the Special Prosecutor's Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca).

According to the indictment, Valdez Alcántara allegedly used his position to extort an individual involved in an investigation into corruption within the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa). The prosecution claims the defendant initially demanded $200,000 in bribes, later reducing the request to $150,000. Additionally, the indictment states he expressed interest in receiving a Rolex watch and a Mercedes Benz vehicle.

The case progressed following a controlled delivery operation in March, during which the defendant allegedly received $10,000. Valdez Alcántara was subsequently arrested and remains in preventive detention at the Najayo Hombres Correctional and Rehabilitation Center. The Ministerio Público has requested that the court maintain his detention and all existing precautionary measures on his assets.
