Valencia mobilises police and traffic controls for San Juan night festivities

The feast of San Juan on June 24 is observed in many Spanish municipalities, though it is not a national holiday. Localities, especially in the Canary Islands, often declare a day off for traditional bonfires, beach gatherings and night‑time celebrations.

In Valencia, the municipal government organised a large‑scale safety operation for the expected 100,000 participants. The plan includes traffic restrictions on two main urban routes, the distribution of more than 25 tonnes of firewood for authorised bonfires, a mobile hospital, a cleaning crew of about 300 people, and four “Puntos Violeta” offering sexual‑assault prevention advice. More than 300 police officers will be on duty – 218 on the north‑side beaches and 82 on the south – with drone monitoring and strict rules that bonfires are only permitted on the northern beaches. Officials urged responsible alcohol consumption and safe conduct.
