Valencian Community marks October 9th amid social protests and political tension

The October 9th celebrations, marking the Day of the Valencian Community, were characterized by a mix of traditional festivities and significant social and political tension across the region.

In Valencia city, a major demonstration organized by Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV) and other groups marched to defend Valencian identity, the language, public education, and housing rights. This coincided with a housing encampment in the City Hall square. A political standoff emerged between Valencia Mayor María José Catalá and Government Delegate Pilar Bernabé, as the latter refused to forcibly evict the protesters, citing security and constitutional rights.

During the civic procession of the Real Senyera, the public response was polarized; representatives of the Compromís party faced booing, while other political figures received applause. Additionally, a small far-right gathering of approximately 50 people was held in Plaza de la Reina to protest the housing encampment.

Throughout the Valencian Community, including towns like Castelló, Benicarló, and Onda, traditional music, dances, and parades were held to honor local heritage. However, the institutional ceremonies at the Palau de la Generalitat faced criticism due to the reported absence of catering for guests.
