Valencia political tension over 2024 DANA disaster management

Political tensions have escalated within the Valencia Provincial Council regarding the management of the October 29, 2024, DANA flood disaster. During an extraordinary plenary session, members of the PSPV (Socialist Party of the Valencian Country) walked out after a motion against President Vicent Mompó, Roads official Reme Mazzolari, and Fire Services official Avelino Mascarell failed to pass.

The motion, initiated by the PSPV, criticized the officials for alleged inconsistencies in their testimonies before a judge and investigative commissions. The motion was defeated by votes from the PP, Ens Uneix, and Vox. Following the vote, the PSPV deputies left the session, prompting President Mompó to criticize the move as a failure of democratic conduct.

In defense of their actions, the governing team highlighted their direct support for municipalities and investments in water and road infrastructure, despite noting that the corporation lacked direct competencies during the emergency. This political friction occurs as judicial investigations continue into the catastrophe, which resulted in 233 deaths according to a September 2026 judicial count.
