Valencia prepares bronze monument to honor DANA volunteers

A monument dedicated to the volunteers of the 2024 DANA disaster is currently being cast in bronze in Alcantarilla, Murcia. Designed by Valencian artist Paco Roca, the 2.20-meter sculpture is intended to honor the spontaneous citizen movement that mobilized to assist those affected by the tragedy.

The sculpture is a bronze recreation of a mural previously created by Roca for the facade of La Rambleta. It depicts a young female volunteer, clothes splattered with mud, walking forward while carrying a bucket and a broom. The artist stated that the work aims to ensure the massive wave of national and international solidarity is not forgotten.

The Valencia City Council awarded the contract for the design, production, and installation to Roca on July 1 for 50,600 euros. The monument is scheduled to be installed in the Plaza de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia in La Torre—a location that served as a volunteer coordination center—before the second anniversary of the disaster on October 29.
