Valencia receives first components for new proton therapy center

The Valencian Health Department has received the first technological components for a new proton therapy center connected to Hospital La Fe in Valencia. The initial shipment arrived at the Port of Valencia in six containers.

Major components, including the particle accelerator and the ‘gantry’—a large rotating structure that directs proton beams 360 degrees around a patient—are expected to arrive at the Port of Sagunto in September. The equipment was custom-built for this facility as part of a national program to implement proton therapy within the National Health System.

The project involves significant investment: €29.04 million for the machinery and associated technology, funded by the Amancio Ortega Foundation, and €21.5 million from the Conselleria de Sanitat for the construction of the specialized building. The facility features a 350-square-meter bunker with walls between 2.5 and 3 meters thick to ensure radiation containment. Once installation and calibration are complete, the center aims to begin treating its first patients before the end of 2027. This high-precision technology is particularly beneficial for pediatric and young oncology patients.
