Global school year begins with new programs and infrastructure challenges

The 2026-2027 school year has commenced across various regions, marked by both new developments and ongoing infrastructure challenges.

In New York City, nearly one million students are returning to classes. The city is launching five new public schools in the Bronx and Queens, including the Bronx School of Hip-Hop, which integrates urban culture like DJing and graffiti into its curriculum. This expansion aims to alleviate classroom congestion and provide specialized programming.

In Spain, the return to school presents a mix of local updates and systemic issues. In Valencia, local committees have denounced precarious conditions in municipalities like Massanassa and Alfafar, where approximately 3,000 students are using prefabricated classrooms following the 2024 floods. Similarly, in Torre Alháquime, significant investments are being made to protect schools from future flooding.
