Valencia stages new takes on Lope de Vega classics

Bestiario Creación presented a re‑imagining of Lope de Vega’s Los locos de Valencia under the title Los cuerdos de Valencia at the XIV edition of ClasicOFF. The production ran on 14‑16 July 2024 in Nave 73, was directed by Mariano Estudillo and created collectively by Ruth Rubio, Estudillo and the company, and featured a cast of Patricia Berenguer, Lorena Cervera, Moisés Chic, Pablo Ríos Negueruela and Paula Susavila. The piece explores madness, power and modern misinformation through an interactive hospital setting.

The Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC) launched a summer programme across the Valencian Community. “El Narciso en su opinión”, adapted by Chema Cardeña and directed by Rebeca Valls, opened at the Roman Theatre of Sagunto on 1‑2 August with accessible audio‑description and subtitles. The FRESCA! festival in Alicante opened on 17 July with “Las hijas de Bernarda”, a co‑production with Taiat Dansa directed by Meritxell Barberá and Inma García. The same festival presented “Los locos de Valencia”, directed by Jorge Picó, on 21 July with a twelve‑actor Valencian cast. IVC also staged “Los días lentos”, “El aguante”, re‑programmed “La mancha”, and announced the upcoming work “Arxipèlag”.
