Valencia to build 12 million euro storm tank in Natzaret
The Valencia City Council is preparing to tender a project for a new storm tank in the Natzaret district, located near the old Turia riverbed. The project involves a 12 million euro investment and is expected to take 18 months to complete.
With a capacity exceeding 3,000 cubic meters—roughly equivalent to three million liters—the tank is designed to mitigate pollutant discharges during heavy rainfall. Because Valencia uses a combined sewage system where wastewater and rainwater share the same pipes, intense storms can overwhelm treatment plants, leading to untreated water being released into the environment.
The new infrastructure will temporarily store the most contaminated water and allow solids to settle. Once rainfall subsides, the stored water will be sent gradually to the Cantarranas pumping station and subsequently to the Pinedo metropolitan treatment plant for processing. This measure aims to protect the final stretch of the river and the future Mouth Park.
