Valencia to transform Montortal Palace into new museum headquarters

The Valencia City Council has announced plans to rehabilitate the Palacio de los Marqueses de Montortal, located in Plaza de Tetuán, to serve as the second headquarters of the Museu de la Ciutat. The project aims to transform the historic Baroque palace, which has fallen into disrepair, into a cultural space dedicated to the municipal art collection spanning from the Renaissance to the mid-19th century.

Mayor María José Catalá visited the site to present the new destination for the building. The expansion will allow the city to move significant artworks currently held in storage into permanent exhibition. The Montortal site will host works by artists such as Joan de Joanes, Francisco Ribalta, Jerónimo Jacinto Espinosa, José Vergara, and Vicente López.

This reorganization will allow the current museum headquarters at the Palacio del Marqués de Campo to focus on paintings from the second half of the 19th century and later periods. The transition is part of a broader cultural strategy to link the city's history with its architectural heritage.
